Through most of the twentieth century, the road north ended just beyond Cape Tribulation.

The rugged Bloomfield Track was finally completed in 1983, but only after mass arrests broke the most dramatic resistance in Australian environmental history. The Track crawls 32 kilometers over mountainous rainforest to the Bloomfield River, connecting with a road on to Cooktown.

Because the nights were warm and a little buggy, Carolyn and Charlie tried out Carolyn's self-opening ("just a flick of the wrist") mossie shelter, with its "self-inflating" mattress pads. Actually pretty cool and comfortable.
